Post Graduate Department of Music Vocal of Khalsa College, Patiala organised a programme to pay homage to the Iconic Ghazal Singer Lt. Jagjit Singh. A documentary film based on his life was shown to all faculty members of the college and students who were present there and guest of honour Nasir Ali arrived as singer in the programme.
Dr. Dharminder Singh Ubha, Principal of the college, while welcoming the guests, staff members and students said that Jagjit Singh has gained acclaim over masses because of the meanings he added to his words and melody evoked by them. Music is a healing therapy as it stirs one's soul. This renowned singer has contributed in the revival and popularity of Ghazal. He always chose and composed what was soothing to the ears and relevant to the masses.
The programme was inaugurated with recitation of a shabad by Assistant Professor of the department of Music Dr. Gauri Khanna and S. Kunwarpreet Singh. Nasir Ali sang a melodious Ghazal. Dr. Gurmeet Singh sang a song reflecting rich cultural heritage of Punjab.
In the end, Dr. Jagjit Singh, Head, Post Graduate Department of Music Vocal in collaboration with other staff members sang a ghazal in order to pay tribute to legendary singer. Apart from this, Dr. Harvinder Kaur, Dean, Cultural Activities, Prof. Jaspreet Kaur, Dr. Tejinderpal Singh also sang songs in their melodious voices.
While thanking all, Dr. Jagjit Singh said that it is a matter of great honour that teachers and students paid tribute to such immortal voice. Dr. Jasleen Kaur, Deputy Principal, Prof. Sunil Mehta, Vice Principal, Dr. Ravinderjit Singh, Controller Examination along with faculty members and students were also present. Khalsa College, Patiala organised a felicitation ceremony to honour the students, conveners and teacher incharges of various events who have brought laurels to the college by winning Overall Championship Trophy during Zonal and Inter Zonal Youth Festival of Punjabi University, Patiala.
Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar, President, Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee, Sri Amritsar Sahib graced the occasion as the chief guest. While appreciating the efforts made by the college Principal Dr. Dharminder Singh Ubha, Prof. Badungar expressed his exhilaration over the monumental feat of the college. In order to motivate the students, Prof. Badungar emphasized that the students must continue to strive towards excellence in future as well. He said that such cultural festivals prove to be instrumental in binding the youth to their rich cultural heritage.

The Botanical Society of Post Graduate Department of Agriculture of Khalsa College, Patiala celebrated “Parthenium Awareness Week- 2017” in collaboration with ICAR- Directorate of Weed Research (DWR)
The Botanical Society of Post Graduate Department of Agriculture of Khalsa College, Patiala celebrated “Parthenium Awareness Week- 2017” in collaboration with ICAR- Directorate of Weed Research (DWR), Jabalpur (M.P.) by releasing Mexican Beetle (Zygograma bicolorata) for Biological control of Parthenium/ Carrot weed in the college campus to eradicate weeds from the campus.
During this week, an induction program was organized by the Botanical Society to create awareness regarding Parthenium. Dr. Akshita Dhaliwal, Convener of the Botanical Society formally welcomed the Principal Dr. Dharminder Singh Ubha and the students. Two special lectures were organized on topic “Congress Grass: Approaches in Effective Management” given by Dr. Jashanjot Kaur, Assistant Professor in Agronomy and on topic entitled “Biocontrol agents of Parthenium” was given by Dr. Manish Sharma, Assistant Professor in Entomology of the department. In continuation with the celebration of Awareness week Botanical Society also organized a Paper Reading Contest on topics related to Common Weeds of the Plains of Punjab, Methods of biological control of Weeds, Parthenium, Lantana, Eicchornia as an abnoxious weeds and its Biocontrol at Bhai Gurdas Conference Hall. 40 students of the department actively participated in paper reading contest. These students were judged by Dr. Akshita Dhaliwal, Dr. Sukhvir Kaur and Dr. Manish Sharma of the Department. The first position was bagged by Yashdeep Singh (B.Sc. Agri. III), second position by Jaswinder Kaur (B.Sc. Agri. Hons. II), third positions by Nitika (B.Sc. Med. II) and Harmanbir Kaur (B.Sc. Med. III).
Dr. Dharminder Singh Ubha, Principal of the College lauded the role of Botanical Society of the Department to celebrate the Parthenium Awareness Week 2017 to control this weed and its ill effects on Human Health and on Agriculture production.
Rajdeep Singh Dhaliwal, Head, Post Graduate Department of Agriculture, said that such lectures helps to inculcate scientific aptitude in students and help them to pursue research in this subject. Dr. Akshita Dhaliwal, Convener Botanical Society thanked the Cooperation and guidance given by Dr. Sunil Kumar, Scientist, DWR, Jabalpur for the celebration of this week. The proceeding of the function was conducted by Mandeep Kaur, Assistant Professor of the Department. All the students and faculty members attended this celebration.
