About Department of Zoology

Department of Zoology was established in the year 1961. The Zoology Department plays a crucial role in understanding the biological diversity, physiology, genetics, and ecological significance of animals. It offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers fundamental and advanced topics such as animal anatomy, physiology, taxonomy, evolution, genetics, biotechnology, and environmental conservation. With a strong emphasis on practical learning, the department provides hands-on experience through laboratory experiments and field studies. Students gain expertise in wildlife conservation, entomology, parasitology, and molecular biology, preparing them for careers in healthcare, environmental science, research, and biotechnology. The integration of Skill Enhancement Courses (SECs) and Inter-Disciplinary Courses (IDCs) further strengthens their analytical, technical, and research skills. The Zoology Department is committed to fostering scientific curiosity, ethical research practices, and sustainable approaches, ensuring students are well-equipped for higher education, competitive exams, and professional opportunities in life sciences.

A B.Sc. in Zoology opens up a wide range of opportunities in both academic and professional fields. Graduates can pursue careers in wildlife conservation, environmental consulting, research institutions, zoological parks, and even forensic science. Many choose to advance their studies with an M.Sc. or Ph.D. in zoology or related fields like biotechnology, genetics, or environmental science. Opportunities also exist in government organizations, NGOs, and international bodies working on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. With the growing focus on ecological balance and species preservation, zoology graduates have an expanding scope in industries like pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and bioinformatics, making it a dynamic and rewarding career choice.

Program Outcomes (PO)

The study of Zoology, Botany, and Chemistry as major subjects, along with Biotechnology as a minor subject, offers a well-rounded and interdisciplinary approach to understanding the natural world. Zoology provides insights into animal biology, physiology, and ecology, while Botany focuses on plant sciences, including taxonomy, genetics, and biotechnology applications. Chemistry plays a crucial role in understanding the molecular and biochemical processes that govern life. The inclusion of Biotechnology as a minor subject introduces students to modern advancements in genetic engineering, molecular biology, and industrial applications, bridging the gap between traditional biological sciences and innovative technologies. This combination not only builds a strong theoretical foundation but also prepares students for research and industry roles in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and environmental sciences.

In addition to the core subjects, the curriculum is enriched with Skill Enhancement Courses (SECs) and Inter-Disciplinary Courses (IDCs). SECs focus on practical, hands-on training in techniques such as laboratory analysis, bioinformatics, and scientific communication, equipping students with essential skills for employability and research. IDCs encourage a broader perspective by integrating concepts from diverse fields, fostering critical thinking and interdisciplinary problem-solving abilities. These courses collectively enhance students' analytical skills, scientific reasoning, and adaptability, making them well-prepared for higher studies, competitive exams, and career opportunities in biotechnology, healthcare, environmental management, and life sciences industries.
