About the Department
Department of Botany was established in year 1961 to teach B.Sc. Medical students. Since its inception, faculty members of the department have been involved in teaching and mentoring students, as well as in pursuing research. The department focuses on undergraduate teaching-learning and appropriately combines classical teaching with innovative digital teaching tools to argument students understanding. The department possesses a very long history in academic performance. A large number of proficient students have been produced by the Department, who had established themselves as crown of many institutions in different parts of country as well as abroad. The department is indeed a nurturing ground for creative excellence, engages itself as a rewarding and supportive pole to the students and alumni alike. The department aims in providing a professional atmosphere that is unique in the sense that it is fast-paced and exciting with the faculty deemed to facilitate a motivating, comfortable and positive academic impression. Since its establishment, the department had taken strenuous attempts to nurture and develop young minds to love and master the discipline of Botany. We believe in making our students socially committed individuals with a deep sense of moral values and personal qualities and to help them achieve their academic goals in a creative and positive way. The department has produces undergraduates who are studying in various post graduate courses, perusing Ph.D. and working in teaching and research profession.
Botany covers all aspects of the life of plants. It includes their structure and development, physiology and biochemistry, genetics as well as their relationships with the environment and other organisms. The Department of Botany, Khalsa College Patiala has been in the fore front of teaching in plant science since its year of establishment 2014. Department has shown its extraordinary performances towards imparting knowledge over plant science and its various scope among students .Various students participated in the programme and acquired useful skill in achieving full knowledge over plant science . The Department of Botany aims at promoting an integral understanding for utilization of plants and to explore underlying mechanisms for promoting eco-friendly environment. The Department strives at its best to boost the diverse applications of plants and their products and to tackle emerging issues of the rapidly growing population. Various academic activities such as invited talks by eminent botanists, celebration of important days related to science, visits to Botanical Gardens, Herbarium and Museum Punjabi University Patiala, Fern House, Baradari Patiala and Field excursion tours are conducted to provide practical information about the subject to the students. The botanical excursions are organized in view to study the wild plant diversity, forest ecosystem and to inculcate the research knowledge to the students by visiting Punjabi University. Various activities for the students of B.Sc. Medical and B.Sc. Agriculture are organized for better understanding of biology discipline. Additionally, all our energies are directed at promoting conducive environment of learning and grooming talent through academic and co-curricular activities. Purpose is to nurture well-trained visionary manpower to shoulder responsibilities in the future scenario of development.
How is B.Sc. Medical with Botany course Beneficial:
There exists a lot of scope after B.Sc. with Botany for instance a student can apply for higher studies like M.Sc. Botany, M.Phill. programs or students who are interested in management jobs can also apply for MBA programs, students interested in teaching profession can opt for B.Ed. degree.
Job opportunities are as wide as research organizations, herbal product companies, farm management organizations, biotechnology firms always require the services of Botany students.
After having passed the course plant scientists can work in the State departments, Botanical Survey of India and Environment Protection Agency etc.
Applicants also can work in administration and marketing for Biological supply houses, Seed companies, Biotechnology firms and Pharmaceutical manufacturers.

Program Outcomes (PO)
Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) offers theoretical as well as practical knowledge about different subject areas viz. Botany, Zoology and Chemistry. This programme course is most beneficial for students who have a strong interest and background in Science. The course forms the basis of science and comprises of the subjects like chemistry, botany and zoology. It helps to develop scientific temper and thus can prove to be more beneficial for the society as the scientific developments can make a nation or society to grow at a rapid pace. To further hone their skills students can go for higher studies i.e. M.Sc and then do some research for the welfare of mankind. Students can join as scientist. Apart from the research jobs, students can also work or get jobs in other technical fields like pharmaceutical, medical, school or college laboratories. Science graduates also recruited in the bank sector to work as customer service executives. Students can also find employment in government sectors.

- PS01: B.Sc. Medical student is able to acquire knowledge regarding Botany, Zoology and Chemistry.
- PSO2: Students will be able to define and explain major concepts in the biological sciences.
- PSO3: They are able to correctly use biological instrumentation and proper laboratory techniques.
- PSO4: Students will be able to communicate biological knowledge in oral and written form.
- PSO5: Students will be able to recognize the relationship between structure and function at all levels: molecular, cellular, and organismal.
- PSO6: They can go for Indian Forest Services and other competitive examinations.
- PSO7: They can opt for higher studies in Botany, Zoology, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology and food technology, Human genetics, Environment sciences, Forensic, Biochemistry and Fisheries.

The society was established in July 2016. The main aim of the society is to conduct conferences, seminars, workshops, and industrial visits to instill academic excellence, personality development, systematic and disciplined work and scientific temper in students to face the challenges in the field of biotechnology. Society also provides financial help to many students for their different needs.
