P.G.Department of Physics
The department of Physics at General Shiv Dev Singh DiwanGurbachan Singh Khalsa College was established in 1960 with an ambition to pursue high-level teaching methodologies advanced areas of experimental & theoretical physics, and interdisciplinary areas of science &technology. Department runs as one of the most popular physics departments among the other institutes across Patiala. Initially college campus was situated in Shri. Dukhniwaran Sahib (Patiala) but later in 1972, Physics department was shifted to the present campus under the headship of Prof. N. S. Gill who had worked very hard to establish the Physics laboratory with small number of equipment’s. During session 2011-12, under the guidance and vision of Dr. Dharminder Singh Ubha Principal & Director (Education) S.G.P.C, the Post Graduate Physics Department was established with recruitment of new faculty members. M.Sc. (Pure Physics) was started with 26 number of students. As a result of formulation of post graduate department, the research activities boosted and faculty got engaged in different research fields and problems. Headed by Dr. Tarlocahan Singh Mahajan, the Department today is actively participating in all the activities held at department and College level. Our faculty is the backbone of our Physics department as they are recognized with different awards and fellowships including post doctorates. We have faculty with interests ranging from experimental to theoretical aspects of quantum computation, condensed matter physics, Nuclear Physics, Solid State Physics, Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems(Fabrication and Experimental Techniques)Presently, the department supports undergraduate program of the institute and offers an MSc Programme in Physics. The Faculty of Department actively participates in Seminars, Discussions and invited talks held time to time. Regular visits of experts from Academia and industry for technical and popular talks add to the vibrant academic culture of collaboration and sharing. The Department organizes national and international conferences from time to time.
The Department has got full flexibilities in framing courses and syllabi. To pursue this meeting of Board of studies are arranged before start of every semester. The members of Board of studies are from various highly renowned colleges and universities. The faculty is very active in extension programs, in reaching out to students, writing the books not only related to subject matters but in other common interest areas too. Under few faculty members, students are pursuing PhD in collaboration with Punjabi University, Patiala. In addition to this, Physics department came out four well equipped laboratories with latest instruments for both years of M.Sc. in Physics. These are Electronics Lab, Optics lab, nuclear lab and FORTRAN lab. The e major instruments in the lab are Dual beam Oscilloscope, Nuclear Counter, NaI (Tl) scintillation detector and Michelson Interferometer. At present the department is running at its full swing. Almost all students of first pass out batch of PG department had got a job or working as entrepreneur and doing well in different fields.
