The Department of English, Cultural Studies and Foreign Languages aims at training students in inter cultural and interdisciplinary interpretation of English literature. The teachers use not only recent ideas from contemporary thought systems but also make use of the comparative method. The simplified teaching of these complex resources prepares students not only for the examinations but also enrich them culturally and aesthetically.
The Department of English was established in 1960. The department constantly strives to structure such activities that meet the global and regional aspirations. The credibility of the department can be gauged from the wide range of activities it undertakes to bring English within the reach of each and every student. Presently the department is running Communication Skills, Elective English and Functional English at the U.G level. The department also introduced One year intensive Diploma in French in .It is a Post- Graduate Department since 2011. We have also introduced English Honours in the session 2015-16 and M.Phil. in the session 2016-17. The department has an atmosphere of co-ordinative teacher student relationship to enthuse and generate academic and creative endeavors
The department structures such activities that meet the global and regional aspirations. The department is constantly in dialogue with contemporary thought systems. In 2010 the department organized UGC sponsored National Conference on ‘Literature of Small Culture: An Assertion of Difference’ ,on December 13, 2015, one day National Conference on ‘Crossing the Borders: Multicultural Dialogue in Literature’ was held. The themes of the conferences were quite relevant in the wake of rising intolerance and violence among conflicting regions, religions and communities. The papers presented in both the conferences were later published in the book form with the same titles.
The department has compiled a book of poetry Flames of Inspiration: an Anthology as a part of curriculum for the U.G students .The book is of immense relevance in view of the eroding moral and ethical values among the students due to excessive onslaught of commercialism and materialism. The department has also published another book Diverse Voices to make the students aware of plethora of viewpoints of the influential figures from various walks of life. The department has also published a collection of stories, All Time Stories. The Department has also published Compendium of Selected Essays
The department also organizes various workshops, seminars, guest lecturers to facilitate the learning process among the students. In the session 2017-18 the department has organized a 30 -day Short Term Course in Spoken English which was open for students of all streams.
English Literary Society of the department provides various platforms to the students to showcase their talents and one of its endeavors was the publication of New Hopes (A collection of poems and short stories by students) – a unique way to give voice to the creative potential of the students. The society undertakes the execution of various programs in order to take the text out of the confines of the classroom. Literature in Colors, Literature in Action, Diwali with Difference Literature Carnival, Quiz literature, Literature Fest, Literature Camp, Mega Literary Quiz, Two Day Workshop on Literary and Interdisciplinary Skills, Literature Splash, Rendezvous with Literature, Inter College Poetic Quiz, Shakespeare Mela etc. were organized by the society.
The department has constituted a social club Brave Hearts to generate awareness among students about the need to share their blessings with others. The club makes efforts to collect money and things from students and teachers and distribute them to the needy sections of the society. The club donated five new bicycles, uniforms to orphanages; clothes to the lepers and quilts to Government Rajindra Hospital and to the support staff of the college. The club also took the initiative to perform street plays in Dhablaan village on social themes. The club has also undertaken a plantation drive within the campus.
