A One Day Academic Tour of B.Sc. Agriculture 4th year, B.Voc. Agriculture-I and B.Sc. Medical-I of G.S.S.D.G.S. Khalsa College, Patiala was organized to visit Dr. Y.S.Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (H.P.)

Dr. Y.C.Gupta, Training and Visit Officer gave information to the students about the history, extension work of University and various research programmes being run by the institution. Dr. Pooja Sharma, Assistant Professor of Floriculture gave students valuable information about different  floral crops grown in polyhouses (protected cultivation in controlled environment) and open conditions i.e. Rose, Gladiolus, Bird of Paradise, Marigold, Chrysanthemum, Lilium, Alstroemeria, Sweet William, Sweet Sultan and dry flower like Legrus, Brumus, Status etc. She further told that the technique of  hand pollination of Bird of paradise  discovered by institute and which is a leading producer of Lilium flower under protected conditions. She demonstrated different types of polyhouses (nethouse, shadehouse, glasshouse, walking tunnel house, and hi-tech greenhouse), their working, construction and different flowers and vegetables grown in polyhouses, according to their physiology.

Dr. C.L. Sharma, Assistant Professor, Fruit Science threw light on different fruit crops i.e. Kiwi, Peach, Pear, Plum etc. He informed students about the cultivation practices of these fruits, their propagation, mulching, solar electrical fencing for kiwi crop protection, irrigation schedule, weeding techniques, insect pest control, use of growth regulators, harvesting, and post harvesting practices and marketing. He also told us kiwi is most economical fruit crop for farmers nowadays, as it is used to increase the blood platelets in dengue patients.

At the end, the layouts of contour system were demonstrated to the students. This visit prove to be beneficial for the students  as they grab valuable information related to their Agriculture field. This was a really memorable and knowledgeable study tour for all students.

Dr. Dharminder Singh Ubha Principal Khalsa College Patiala said that such educational visits prove  to be significant for imparting practical knowledge to the students. It provides the students an opportunity to equip themselves with different techniques of Horticulture.

This tour was organized where the supervision of Professor Rajdeep Singh Dhaliwal, Head of Department PG Department of Agriculture. The students were accompanied by Prof. Karan Singh Saini, Prof. Sandeep Singh, Prof. Manish Sharma, Prof. Supinder Kaur, Prof. Kamaljeet kaur and Prof. Mohinder Lal.
