The Post-graduate Department of Music Vocal, Khalsa College, Patiala organised one day UGC sponsored National Conference on ‘Redefining Classical, Semi-Classical & Light Music in the Present Context’. Dr. Gurnam Singh, Dean Academic Affairs, Punjabi University, Patiala was the chief guest and the conference was presided by S. Paramjeet Singh Sidhu (Pammi Bai), Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee. The other dignitaries present in the conference were Prof. Bhupinder Malhotra, Dr. Amritpal Singh, Retd. Principal, Dr. Lokesh Sharma, Dr. Neeraj Gandhi, Sh. Madhuresh Bhatt & Dr. Bhairavi Sharma. Dr. Dharminder Singh Ubha, Director Education, SGPC and Principal, Khalsa College, Patiala welcomed the guests and the delegates present in the conference. In his Inaugural Address, he said that the great personalities, who are devoted to Punjabi culture and community, have raised the level of Punjabi Music. He also said that Khalsa College Patiala is leading in cultural and sports activities and is making progress under Jathedar Avtar Singh Ji. Dr. Ubha emphasized that the youth of Punjab needs to be showed right direction so that they unite themselves with the rich culture of Punjab. The Chief Guest Dr. Gurnam Singh congratulated the college for reaching new heights of academic excellence. He said that authentic musicological study of every tradition of Indian music is fundamentally required to redefine and rediscover the original forms of various streams of our Sangeet rather than blindly following classical music as base of every music stream. In the Presidential Address, S. Paramjeet Singh Sidhu said that Music is about feelings of the soul and it has no boundaries. He also stressed that the folk instruments represent Punjab's rich music culture and the youth of Punjab should be directed towards folk music. More than 80 delegates participated in the conference. Dr. Jagjit Singh, Head, Post-graduate Department of Music Vocal threw light on the theme of the conference and said that music needs to be redefined and the importance of its various types needs to be emphasized. He thanked all the guests and the scholars who shared their valuable views and contributed towards the success of the conference.
