General Shivdev Singh Diwan Gurbachan Singh Khalsa College, Patiala is a premier institute of higher education in the state of Punjab. The institute was founded in 1960 with the untiring efforts of Padam Shri Dr. Khushdeva Singh and Dr. Ganda Singh renowned historian who was also its first Principal. It started with a humble beginning at Gurdwara Sri Dukhniwaran Sahib, Patiala with 5 rooms and a total strength of 35 students. It was shifted to its present premises in the year 1973 for which the foundation was laid by the then Chief Minister of Punjab Giani Zail Singh in 1972. The college was taken over by Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, Sri Amritsar, the apex body of the Sikhs in the year 1991. The college then had around 18 classrooms and 3 Science labs. The college has been continuously growing leaps and bounds under the stewardship of SGPC Sri Amritsar. Jathedar Avtar Singh, the present President of the SGPC, Sri Amritsar, a man with the great vision and mission for education, has been making unstinted efforts for the development of education for all the educational institutions under its management.
The institution has 20.5 acres of urban land at Badungar Road Patiala and 18.5 acres of land at village Dhablan. The campus is home to 6119 students and 194 faculty members and an efficient team of support staff. The Institute is reputed for its state of the art infrastructure, well stocked library, advanced technology labs, science labs, smart classrooms, well equipped gymnasium, playgrounds and complete Wi-Fi campus. The college is in the process of constructing, 6 storied blocks, Bhai Daya Singh Block of Commerce and Management. The institution also has a Mata Gujri Girls Hostel with a capacity to house 350 girl students where students from Punjab and seven other states are residing in a homely and hygienic atmosphere. Dr. Ganda Singh Career Guidance, Counselling and Placement Centre has been working with a purpose to train and provide job opportunities to students and has an excellent and enviable track record for placements.
Presently the institution is running programmes in Humanities, Science, Computer Science, Agriculture, Food Processing, Commerce and Management. The institution is sensitive to the need of innovative research, for this purpose it is in the process of setting up a Campus for Research and Advance Studies at village Dhablan near Patiala. It is successfully running 16 Post Graduate and 29 Undergraduate courses. It is successfully running the Master of Leadership Development under the UGC Scheme of Innovative Programmes. The college has been selected by UGC to run Community College under which two programmes - Advanced Diploma in Green House Technology and Advanced Diploma in Auto Electrical and Electronics are being run effectively and efficiently. The institution has also been granted B.Voc. Food Processing & Engineering and B.Voc. Software Development under the Skill Development Scheme of UGC. Khalsa College Patiala is one of the 47 institutions of India to have been selected by UGC to establish "Deen Dyal Upadhaya Kaushal Kendra" to develop skills of the students through B.Voc. & M.Voc. (Agriculture) and B.Voc. & M.Voc. (Automobile) programmes. The institution has also introduced Honours in B.Sc. Physics, Chemistry, Honours School of Mathematics and B.A. School of Honours in English from the session 2015-16. The college proposes to start M.A. History, M.A. Psychology, M.A. Political Science and M.Sc. Statistics.
The college in recent times has brought laurels in Academics, Sports and Cultural activities. The Department of Mathematics has been consistently achieving top positions in the university for the last 7 years. Similarly, students of M.Sc. Physics, M.Com, MBA (Global), MLD, B.Com. (Accounting & Finance) and B.Sc. CSM have got positions in the University merit list. In Sports the college is champion at Inter-college level in Handball for the last 14 years and has won positions in Hockey, Cricket, Table-Tennis etc. Trisha Deb, a student of M.A. English got two Bronze Medals in Archery in 17th Asian Games. Jai Singh Dhaliwal got one Gold Medal and one Bronze Medal in Rifle Shooting at All India Inter-university level. In cultural activities for the past 7 years, the college has stood 1st among other competing colleges of the university and has won various positions in the zonal and Inter-zonal levels. NSS and NCC boast of a good strength of student enrollment and they are encouraged to participate enthusiastically in its activities. Some of the students have represented the college at Republic Day Parade.
