Information about the Automobile world

The automotive industry in India is one of the largest in the world with an annual production of 23.37 million vehicles in FY 2014-15, following a growth of 8.68 per cent over the last year. The automobile industry accounts for 7.1 per cent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP).Sales of passenger vehicles increased by 11.04 per cent to 242,060 units in April 2016 driven by demand for utility vehicles. While sales of passenger cars went up by 1.87 per cent to 162,566 units in April 2016, those of utility vehicles grew by 43 per cent to 62,170 units. Sales of commercial vehicles maintained its momentum on back of replacement demand and grew by 17.36 per cent to 53,835 units.India’s automotive industry is one of the most competitive in the world. It does not cover 100 per cent of technology or components required to make a car but it is giving a good 97 per cent.Leading auto maker Maruti Suzuki expects Indian passenger car market to reach four million units by 2020, up from 1.97 million units in 2014-15. The Indian automotive sector has the potential to generate up to US$ 300 billion in annual revenue by 2026, create 65 million additional jobs and contribute over 12 per cent to India’s Gross Domestic Product.Demand for automotive service technicians and mechanics is expected to grow about as fast as the average among all occupations over the 2014-2024. The number of jobs is expected to rise by 5% over that period, which will result in an estimated5,39,100 new jobs being created. Automotive dealerships and independent automotive repair facilities will create the most job opportunities.The need for technicians will also increase with the number of vehicles on the road. Growth in the driving age population and multi-car families will also increase the need for more technicians to perform tasks, such as oil changes and brake pad replacements. In addition, more repairs and maintenance will be needed as vehicles are lasting longer. Many experienced technicians that work for automobile dealerships work on commission related to labour cost get handsome salary by the employer or they can work as an entrepreneur or can migrate to foreign countries.

Information about the course

It is a two year Skill imparting course in Automobile sector running under community college in Automobiles. The following are the objectives of the course.

  1. to make higher education relevant to the learner and the community.
  2. to integrate relevant skills into the higher education system
  3. to provide skill based education to students currently pursuing higher education but actually interested in entering the workforce at the earliest opportunity
  4. to provide employable and certifiable skills based on National Occupational Standards (NOSs) with necessary general education to Senior Secondary School pass-outs, with general education and /or vocational education background.
  5. to provide for up-gradation and certification of traditional / acquired skills of the learners irrespective of their age
  6. to provide opportunities for community–based life-long learning by offering courses of general interest to the community for personal development and interest
  7. to provide opportunity for vertical mobility to move to higher education in future
  8. to offer bridge courses to certificate holders of general / vocational education, so as to bring them at par with appropriate NSQF level.
  9. to provide entrepreneurial orientation along with required skill training for self-employment and entrepreneurship development.
